EAL
Hello, my name is Mr Hyland and I am responsible for the learning of pupils who are multi-lingual or have EAL (English as an Additional Language.).
Who are EAL children?
A pupil will be classed as ‘EAL’ if their first language is not English. The Department for Education (DfE) defines ‘first language’ as 'The language to which a child was initially exposed during early development and continues to be exposed in the home or in the community'.
How are EAL children supported?
When EAL children first join Rose Hill they will be partnered with a ’buddy’. This is someone who will support and guide them in their first few days. Children will have a variety of resources available to them according to their level of fluency in English. We are lucky enough to have a Romanian translator as member of our staff which means we are able to offer children who are Romanian speakers extra support in the classroom and to give support to parents who need help communicating with the school .
