Lions
Welcome to Lions class
Hello! My name is Mr. Thorpe and I am the class teacher in Middle Phase. I teach in Lions class which is one of the year 3/4 classes. I am also the Computing and Online Safety lead in school. I love teaching at Rose Hill and helping children fulfil their potential!
I have a range of interests but football seems to take over any spare time. If you see me in school, then say hello or share a joke (just try not to tell me when you should be learning)!
Please check this page regularly to find out how Lions have been achieving success together!
Our learning this half term
Week 2
This week we have been story seekers and practising being story tellers. Perhaps the children can share with you a change in tone of voice, the speed of speech, variety of accents and engaging the listener as they read their books. In Maths, Year 3 have been exploring length and perimeter and Year 4 have been learning about decimals.
This week we have started our new Science unit of electricity. We had UK Power Network visit school on Monday. We learnt all about how electricity travels to our house, we got to explore some of the equipment used and importantly we learnt how to stay safe with electricity!
Summer 2
Week 1
We've had a brilliant first week of Summer 2. In English this week we've been story seekers, we've enjoyed sharing our favourite stories and discussing these. We've also acted out stories and we've been challenged to use our imaginations! In Maths, we've been looking at statistics. We have looked at tally charts, pictograms, bar charts and tables. We've had to use addition and subtraction to help us answer 1-step and 2-step questions. Year 4's have been practising their times tables ready for their multiplication check next week. If you'd like further practise then please visit 'sound check' on https://ttrockstars.com/
In RE, we have started a new unit of work and we are looking at Judaism this half term. We made Mezuzahs and looked at the Bible Story 'Noah's Ark'. In Music we have been composing a piece of music and the children got the opportunity to play a variety of instruments. In PE, we have practised batting and preparing for sports day on 23/06/22.
Week 5
What a fantastic half term it's been. This week we've been busy in DT, Art and Music. It DT we designed, made and evaluated Anderson Shelters which were used in WW2. In Art, we designed and made a Jubilee themed tile for a whole school display. In Music we performed 'Bringing Us Together'. Click the link below to hear our performance. On Friday 27th May we had a whole school Jubilee party and we performed our 80s and 90s dances to the rest of the school and parents. We hope everyone enjoyed watching these!

Week 4
A super week in Lions will plenty of success! This week in English we have written a first person narrative based on our text 'The Lion and The Unicorn', this book generated many class discussions and the secure knowledge of the book helped the children with their fantastic writing. In Maths we have been ordering, comparing, adding and subtracting fractions this week.
We have finished our World War 2 unit this week and we explored the questions: What was the blitz? and What was the role of woman during the war? The children have engaged fantastically with History and have recalled and retrieved key information along the way. We have continued to practise our dances for 'Thriller' and 'Macarena'. The songs are below if anyone would like to practise the dances at home before Friday 27.3.22.
Week 3
We've had a fantastic week in Lions. We've continued with our book 'The Lion and the Unicorn' as a stimulus for our writing. The children have produced some fantastic writing with a focus on using speech. In Maths, we came away from fractions this week and looked at telling the time.
In our busy afternoons, we have enjoyed beginning to learn 2 dances ready for the Queen's Jubilee celebration coming up. Year 3's are learning Thriller and Year 4's are learning the Macarena. In History we have continued learning about WWII and this week we have been exploring the learning questions 'What was it like to be a solider?' and 'What was the role of the RAF?'.
Below are pictures of the RAF and the Luftwaffe Air Force during the Battle of Britain. We acted out the role of the RAF with paper airplanes. Here is also a picture of one of our diary entries as a soldier from WWII.
Week 2
It has been a shorter but no less busy week in the Middle Phase. We have continued to explore life as an evacuee from our book 'The Lion and the Unicorn'; writing letters, creating setting descriptions and diary entries. We have begun to put this story into context by exploring the events that started World War Two, making timelines, looking at key figures involved and which countries formed alliances. In maths we have continued our work on fractions and have also looked at acute, obtuse and right angles in our Friday sessions.
Summer 1
Week 1
Welcome back, hope you had a brilliant Easter break. This week in Lions we have started our new topic of WW2. We have started off by learning about why the war broke out. In English we have started a text called The Lion and the Unicorn about an evacuee and in Maths we have continued with fractions.
On Thursday 28th April 2022 we were lucky enough to attend The School Farm and Country Fair at trinity park. This was an exciting day with plenty of activities and learning happening. The children experienced meeting many animals, having a ride on a tractor's trailer, learning about food and how farming works!
