Lions
Welcome to Middle Phase

Hello! My name is Mr. Thorpe and I am a class teacher in Middle Phase. I teach in Lions class which is one of the year 3/4 classes. I am also the Computing and Online Safety lead in school. I love teaching at Rose Hill and helping children fulfil their potential!
I have a range of interests but football seems to take over any spare time. If you see me in school, then say hello or share a joke (just try not to tell me when you should be learning)!
Please check this page regularly to find out how Lions have been achieving success together!

Week 7
What a great half term! I can't believe we're at the end of a half term already.
This week we completed our end of unit assessments in History and Science. The amount of knowledge retained has been incredible to see! We have also completed a RE unit this week and we've been exploring the question 'How does believing Jesus is their saviour inspire Christians to save and serve others?' This has involved listening and discussing stories and drawing on our own experiences of being rescuers too. In Maths, we have been revisiting prior learning before starting addition and subtraction.
This half term we have focussed on being respectful and well done to all of the 'pupils of the week'! Everyone deserves a restful half term and we look forward to seeing you in Autumn 2!
Week 6
A super busy and really enjoyable week of learning in LKS2! In English, we have started our new book 'Black Dog' and we have been predicting what we think will happen. Also, we have completed some creative writing based on the picture below. In maths, we have started our unit on addition and subtraction. Also, we have improved our recall of the 4 times tables. In music, we have learnt and performed the song 'Mamma Mia' using glockenspiels. In science, we have explored the learning question: How does sound change over distance? Being Historians, we have learnt that the Ancient Egyptians communicated using hieroglyphics.
Week 5
We have loved our learning this week! We have written our own autobiography on Howard Carter and his discovery of Tutankhamun. We have been learning the three times tables and developing our knowledge on place value including comparing and ordering 3-digit numbers! Being Scientists, we found out that we can protect our eyes from the sun using a hat or glasses. In History, we explored the learning question: Who were the Egyptian Gods?
Week 4
What an amazing week of learning we have had in Middle Phase! We have read and answered retrieval questions about Howard Carter and the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. We have been writing about this in English using fronted adverbials and conjunctions. In maths, we have continued our learning on place value, focussing on rounding numbers. We have been improving our recall of the 10 times tables and we have really enjoyed using a counting stick. In science, we found out all about Percy Shaw and his invention of cats eyes. History was a real highlight as we acted out the stages of mummification!
Week 3
We've had a fantastic week in Middle Phase. In English we've continued reading the story of Tutankhamun and we've written diary entries in the past and present perfect tense. In reading, we've found out about about Howard Carter this week who was an archaeologist that discovered Tutankhamun's tomb. In Maths, we've continued to learn about place value and we've started to explore number lines. We've also focussed on the 5x tables this week. In Science, we carried out an investigation in to which materials are reflective. Fun! In History, we started to look at some pharaoh's and what they achieved.
Week 2
It has been another exciting week of learning in LKS2! We have started our first writing unit all about Tutankhamun, including creating a mind-map and using conjunctions. In maths, we have begun our learning about place value and partitioning numbers. We are focussing on our two times tables this week, so we have been practicing this as a class, including learning ‘Rolling Numbers.’ Our science unit this term is light, so we experimented making shadows of animals using torches, as well as finding out about light sources. On Wednesday afternoon, we found out when the Ancient Egyptian civilisation was – ordering a timeline.
Autumn term
Week 1
This week has seen us get off to a cracking start in LKS2. We have escaped an Ancient Egyptian pyramid solving a series of clues and completing a series of tasks along the way. We have also looked at the drawing techniques of David Hockney to help us draw and design canopic jars, that we brought to life using paper mache. We have also taken some time to look at ourselves and discuss what is our favourite part of us is. We used the book The Best Part of Me by Wendy Ewald to help us.
